This year started off with being a part of two important video projects focused on spreading joy: We Choose Love by Lynne Taylor-Corbett and Beth Falcone, and Face The Music and Dance by Cassie Nordgren. We have been busy teaching students at NYU’s Swing Dance Society and private classes to swing dance teams. Fun events have included working in pre-production with Andy Blankenbuehler on his new Broadway show Bandstand, Brian performed on stage with the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Madison Square Garden, and as a part of the Vanaver Caravan, we performed for youth delegates and permanent UN ambassadors at the United Nations Youth Assembly. And it’s only February!
This year proved to be full of wonderful surprises. For the first time, we directed and staged the dancer choreography for the Broadway show SWING! for Norwegian Cruise Line along side the original Broadway director/choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett both in the spring and in the fall. At the start of the year we traveled for the first time to India teaching and performing and had the most remarkable experience. While in New York we taught and performed at Dance Flurry in Saratoga Springs, held a dance presentations for the United Nations Youth Assembly with the Vanaver Caravan, performed for the Dueling Pianos of the Blues, Swing, and Boogie Woogie event at the Michael Schimmel Performing Arts Center, taught, judged, and emceed the NYU Intercollegiate Swing Exchange, performed at spectacular private events of the spanning the 1920’s to the 1950’s eras at Rainbow Room, won 1st in a swing dance contest at Intrepid: Battle of the Big Bands, were a part of Rose Troche’s new virtual reality project, and very excitedly performed in the Red Hot Chili Peppers music video “Go Robot”.
In 2015, we performed an eight month contract with Norwegian Cruise Lines, sailing the high seas and performing the Broadway show SWING! We had the great opportunity to work with the original Broadway director and choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett, rehearsal directors Kim Craven and Matt Rivera, and aerial coach Salina Bartunek-Andrews. We also had the amazing opportunity to work with Travis Payne and Stacy Walker in Legends in Concert. Together we were dance captains, and Samantha was flight captain in SWING! It truly was an experience of a lifetime. We even had the remarkable opportunity to return months later to Florida to stage and clean the show as the final cast of our contract returned to prepare a short contract over the holidays. We look forward to being rehearsal directors for SWING! for future casts in the new year.
Upon our return home to New York City we performed and taught at many locations. Teaching: The Juilliard School Dance Division, New York University Swing Dance Society, Columbia University Swing Dance Club, Swing ReMix, New York Swing Dance Society. Performances included fun private events ranging from 1920’s Charleston, Harlem night-club Lindy Hop, to a classic ballroom masquerade. It was a heck of a year and we’re excited for what the new year has to hold!
In 2014, we performed at notable events and venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center‘s 2014 Gala, Midsummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center, the Frankie100 show at The Apollo Theater, and Frankie Trifecta at The Edison Ballroom, as well as appeared many times at the Rainbow Room with Syncopated City Dance Company. Other performances included the Jazz Age Lawn Party, Downtown Dance Festival, Old Songs, and Dance Flurry. We traveled to teach around the world including Camp Savoy, in London! On top of these events, we had the great pleasure of continuing into our second year of hosting our own group classes and workshops and choreographing our fourth Performance Class in New York City, meeting new faces and gaining new friends in our students, and watching these students continue to grow in their knowledge and love for swing.
Highlights of 2013 included Brian performing in Shakespeare in the Park’s Comedy of Errors with the Public Theater, Samantha teaching at Lindy in the Park in California, traveling together London to teach and perform at international Lindy Hop dance event Camp Savoy, winning first place at the UltraViolet Live NYU Alumni Talent Competition, and traveling and performing with dance companies Syncopated City Dance Company, Ground Grippers Dance Company, The Vanaver Caravan, Roddy Caravella and His Canarsie Wobblers, and The Big Apple Lindy Hoppers.
2012 highlights include performing and co-choreographing the entertainment at 2012 Miss California Pageant, performing at New York Public Library’s American Revue with SwingFX (now Syncopated City Dance Company), performing at DUMBO Arts Festival with Ground Grippers Dance Company, the Jazz Age Lawn Party with Roddy Caravella and His Canarsie Wobblers and ringing in the new year dancing as us, Samantha and Brian, with Dances of Vice!
